What an Office Buyer Wants You to Know About Generac Generator Choices

I manage facilities purchasing for a 45-person marine field services company. That makes me the person who orders the backup generator, arranges the installation, and later explains why the maintenance invoice is bigger than the sales rep suggested. I am not an electrician or a small-engine mechanic. After six years of buying and servicing equipment, I've learned one thing: the useful question is not which Generac model is best. The useful question is what needs to keep running, and for how long.

If work happens at different locations, the generator needs wheels or a trailer, not a concrete pad. This is where fuel handling becomes the main decision. Gasoline is easy to find but does not store as well. Propane is easier to store and burns cleaner, but you have to confirm the specific model is configured for it. Run a simple test. At 2:00 PM, the power goes out. What happens after 30 minutes? After 4 hours? If data, clients, samples, pumps or safety are at risk, it is Scenario A. If you can close, send people home, and resume tomorrow with no serious damage, the cheaper and smaller option in Scenario B may be enough. If the work location changes every week, do not design around one building, and Scenario C is your world.

If the building can be dark for hours and everyone can work from laptops on battery power, you might not need a generator at all. Battery backup units and power stations can cover the occasional short outage at a much lower total cost.
