I checked our inventory system. S3600 oil filter? That's actually for Generac's older 8kW and 10kW models – not the 22kW. The correct part for the 22kW G0071800 (the model he ordered) is S3700 (or the Generac equivalent 0H8913A). The thread size and bypass valve specs are different. And the Chevy 6.0 oil filter? It's a PF48 or similar – totally different thread pitch. I'd mixed up two completely unrelated parts because they both started with 'S' and were for large engines.
He tried to run the generator with the wrong filter – of course it leaked oil past the seal, dropped pressure, and the engine shut down on low-oil alarm. The sensor never got a chance to fail, but that's not the point.
The Cost of Being Wrong

The S3600 is 3/4-16 but a different bypass pressure. The Chevy 6.0 takes a 3/4-16 as well, but gasket diameter is 70mm. Close, but not identical.
- Always verify the exact model number. The correct oil filter for the 22kW (G0071800) is S3700 or Generac 0H8913A. For the 14kW (G0071790), it's S3600. I had it backwards.
- Crankshaft position sensor testing isn't universal. On that Generac engine, the sensor is a Hall-effect type, not a variable reluctance. You don't test resistance you test voltage output while cranking. I gave him the multimeter resistance method for a VR sensor – wrong again. His sensor was fine; the issue was fuel mix, but he spent an hour testing the wrong thing because of my bad advice.
To be fair, the industry is full of oversimplifications like "just use a standard oil filter" – but that advice ignores the fact that bypass valve pressure, gasket design, and thread length can cause leaks or oil starvation. The quality of the recommendation directly impacted the customer's perception of our brand. He told three other shop owners about the experience. I don't know how many sales that cost us.
The Fix: A Better Process
Now, when someone asks "what's the cost of a Generac generator?" I give them a range (as of January 2025: $7,200–$8,900 for a fully installed 22kW, including permits and concrete pad) and then I ask: "What's your fuel type? Natural gas or propane?"
