Everything I'd read about generator installation said it was straightforward: pick a model, pick a dealer, sign the contract, wait two weeks. In practice, I found the process has more failure points than most people expect. And the failures usually surface months later, when the generator won't start during an actual outage.

But here's the part that surprised me: voltage readings alone miss the real problem. I've seen batteries read a perfect 12.8V — and then, when the cold engine demanded cranking amps, they folded instantly. So if you really want to know, get a load test. Cheap battery testers do this in seconds. Even better: ask the installer to test the battery before they pack up. Five minutes. Worth it.

Step 6: Permits, Codes, and Local Requirements

Not the fun part. Still the part that gets people into trouble.

The most frustrating part of my job is showing up to a finished installation and finding out nobody pulled a permit. You'd think "does your bid include permits?" is a simple enough question — and it is. The problem is when the dealer says "we handle that" and then quietly doesn't.
