What if the gas goes out during the outage?
This is the question nobody asks, and it's the one that hurts.
If your standby generator runs on natural gas, it needs pressure in the line. During a regional event — a deep freeze, a pipeline issue, a widespread outage — utilities sometimes cut or reduce residential gas pressure to protect the system. When that happens, your generator stops. Not because it failed. Because it ran out of fuel.
If your household has anyone with medical equipment, or you're in an area with a history of winter grid stress, ask about a dual-fuel setup or propane storage before you finalize the order. Propane sits in a tank on your property. Nobody can throttle it from a control room.
It's not the cheapest answer, and it's the one I've seen people wish they'd asked about — usually at hour nine of a three-day outage.
