1. What Size Propane Tank Does a Generac Generator Need?
The answer depends on two numbers: how much fuel your model burns, and how long you expect to run. A Generac 24 kW air-cooled generator burns roughly 2.5 gallons of liquid propane per hour at half load, and close to 4 gallons per hour at full load (approximate figures from Generac's published spec sheets, January 2025—your exact model may differ).
Do the math: a 250-gallon tank holds roughly 200 usable gallons. That's about 80 hours at half load, or three days. A 500-gallon tank gives you 160 hours—six to seven days. Plenty for most outages, which is why I recommend starting with the 500-gallon option if you have the space.
It's tempting to think bigger is always better. But oversized tanks mean oversized refill bills, and propane does degrade in long-term storage. I've seen customers with 1,000-gallon tanks refill on a schedule without ever using more than 20% of what they paid for. Size for your actual outage history, not worst-case fantasies.
2. Is the Generac 24 kW Generator Overkill for Most Homes?
Usually, yes. Most homes under 3,000 square feet with gas heating and one AC unit run comfortably on a 14 kW or 18 kW model. The 24 kW unit becomes worth it when you have electric heat, a well pump with a high starting surge, multiple AC zones, or EV charging planned.

3. Do I Need a 48V Battery Charger for My Generator Battery?
Here's something most residential buyers don't realize: the 48V battery charger question is usually a commercial one. Home Generac units use a 12V starting battery with a built-in charger. 48V systems show up in larger commercial installations, UPS integrations, and solar-plus-storage setups where the generator shares the battery infrastructure.
A cheap trickle charger without temperature compensation will cook a starter battery in a warm equipment room. We've seen batteries fail in 14 months—maybe 18, I'd need to pull the service records—instead of a normal 4-5 year lifespan. The charger just kept pushing voltage regardless of the room temperature.
If a 48V charger is part of your design, the spec I care about is the charging profile. Three-stage charging (bulk, absorption, float) is the minimum for continuous-duty applications. I've rejected installations where the charger was meant for intermittent maintenance, not always-on readiness.
4. Can I Install My Own Generator Transfer Switch?
Technically, yes. Practically, I'll try to talk you out of it. A transfer switch is the safety barrier between your generator and the grid. Wire it incorrectly, and your generator can backfeed the utility line while a lineman is working on it. That's why the National Electrical Code (NEC Article 702) has specific requirements for these systems.
Here's a real case from 2024: a customer saved $350 doing his own transfer switch install. Three months later, during a hurricane outage, the generator backfed the grid. The utility fined him, his insurance denied the related property claim, and a licensed electrician charged $2,100 to redo the work. Net result: the "savings" became a $2,450 loss, plus the headache.
What do we see in inspections of DIY installs?
- Grounded neutral not separated from the service panel—a separately derived system needs proper neutral-ground bonding
- Feeder lugs not torqued to spec, causing heat damage over time

5. How Do I Transfer Switch Data to Another Switch?
Here's something vendors won't tell you: most transfer switch controllers don't have a clone or backup feature. You can't plug in a cable and magically copy everything. Every setting has to be manually programmed into the replacement. This applies when you swap an old switch, or when you add a second switch and want mirrored settings.
What "transfer switch data" actually includes:
- Exercise schedule—when the generator runs its weekly self-test
- Load-shed settings—which circuits drop when the generator is overloaded
- Event history and fault logs
- Communication settings for the Wi-Fi/cellular monitoring module
- Sensor calibration values, on commercial units
The two most commonly missed? Exercise schedule and load-shed settings. In 2024, about 7% of our transfer switch replacement rework—or maybe 6%, I'd have to check the Q4 report—was because a load-shed setting didn't carry over, and the generator stalled whenever the AC kicked on. The fix was 15 minutes of configuring, but the customer's confidence was already damaged.
Capture a photo of the old controller's settings screen before you disconnect anything. And after programming, run a full transfer test. I don't sign off on a swap without one.
6. What's the Most Common Installation Mistake You Find?
Not the generator. It's the gas piping. Almost every installation failure I've reviewed traces back to undersized propane or natural gas lines between the tank and the generator.
The generator's fuel inlet port might be 3/8", so the installer assumes 3/8" pipe is fine. But the generator demands a certain BTU flow rate at full load. If the line is too small, the pressure drops, the generator starts, then stalls when the load kicks in. It gets diagnosed as a generator problem, but it's a fuel supply problem.
The second version is single-stage gas regulation. Many Generac units need two-stage regulation: a high-pressure regulator at the tank, then a secondary regulator near the generator. Skip the second stage, and the unit starves under load, causing flickering lights and nuisance shutdowns.
At least, that's been my experience with residential and light commercial installs. It's always the invisible parts—wiring, gas lines, grounding—that cause the headline failures.
7. Natural Gas or Propane for a Generac Generator?
Generac sells dual-fuel models because the right answer depends on where you live. Natural gas gives you unlimited run time and no tank refills. But during the 2021 Texas freeze, a lot of natural gas wells and pipes froze, leaving generators without fuel while propane customers with onsite tanks kept running.
Propane gives you fuel independence: if the fuel is in the tank, the generator runs. The trade-offs: tank rental or ownership, refill logistics, and the fact that propane breaks down when stored too long.
My practical view: if you live in an area where power fails but gas infrastructure stays online, natural gas is simpler. If you're in a region where winter storms take everything down together, a 500-gallon propane tank is your independence. And if you really can't decide, the dual-fuel option on many Generac models lets you connect both and switch later. It costs more upfront, but it buys optionality.
One last thing: when your generator fires up for the first time, test it under load—turn on the AC, the well pump, the electric range. That's when transfer switch configuration and fuel supply problems reveal themselves. An inspection after a load test catches the issues that matter.
